Spotlight Coloring – Make a Card Monday #274

Hi Everyone! Kristina here. Welcome to another
Make a Card Monday video. Today I’m going to be creating a card using the Baked with
Love stamp set from Lawn Fawn. It’s going to be a card that has lots of water coloring
on it. So I’ve cut out some water color paper. This is Strathmore watercolor paper and its
cut to 4.5″x4.5. I’m going to use one of these circle dies from Lawn Fawn, but not as a die,
but just as a template to draw on a circle. I’m going to take a pencil and trace the inside
of this circle and then I’m going to be stamping a bunch of the stamps from the stamp set in
StazOn JetBlack ink. Like I said before I’m going to be doing some water coloring so I
needed to use a waterproof ink. So I’m using my MISTI tool today and this is because I
knew that we the texture of the water color paper I might not get a really clean impression
the first time I stamp. That’s why I’m using the MISTI, because you can place your paper
on the left side and put your stamps on the right and then you can swing over that plate
that has the stamps on it and stamp down and if you don’t get a good impression you can
re-ink the stamps and do it again. I’m glad I decided to break out my MISTI tool for this
in particular, because what I had feared would happen, did. I didn’t get a really good clean
impression on some of the stamping. You’ll notice that stick of butter and also that
spoon and the bottom half of the stand mixer isn’t very dark and that’s because I didn’t
press down hard enough in that area. So I inked up the stamps once again and I just
had to swing over the stamps and then really press down and make sure that you get those
areas well press down on to the water color paper. This time it worked much much better.
So I’m glad I used the MISTI tool for that. After I had that initial stamping done I just
used a smaller acrylic block and stamped the other images, just around to fill out that
area. The reason I didn’t use the MISTI tool for this was because it was just easier to
stamp a few at a time, but I did want to stamp all those original ones in the center of that
circle all at once, because I wanted to make sure that those images were spaced just right.
You don’t have to use the MISTI tool for that, but I thought it made it just a little bit
easier. So now I’m using some water color paints to paint in the images here. Speeding
up the video process so it doesn’t take as long. I’m only going to color in the interior
of that penciled circle. So I’m not going to be painting the outside of these images
that are beyond the circle. I’m sort of making this sort of like a spotlight of color. I’m
going to have all of images on the outside of the circle, be a neutral shade and it’s
really going to spot light all of those images in the center. The water color pallet I’m
using today is from Kuretake Zig. This is the Gansai Tambi water color set. This is
the 36 set. You guys saw me use this last week. I’ve just been really loving this water
color set. So after I’ve painted all of the images, sorry I’m loosing my voice today. After I painted all the images I took some Tumbled Glass Distress
Ink. Just because I wanted a really pale blue and there really wasn’t this particular blue
color in the watercolor pallet. It was all a little bit too bright or too muted. I wanted
to have this kind of this blue color. That was the color I was looking for. So I just
used some Distress Ink. So I finished off some of the little images on the interior
of the circle. The little hearts and also that top of the cupcake. Then it was time
to start coloring all of the images outside of the circle. So I’m using Pumice Stone Distress
ink. I’m using this Distress Ink for the same reason I used the blue Distress Ink before.
Just for ease of use. The color is already exactly what I wanted it to be. It’s already
toned down and if I need to have more color to keep painting I can just add more from
the ink pad instead of having to mix color from the water color pallet. It was just a
little bit easier to do it this way. So after I painted those images in and dried them with
my heat tool I then erased that pencil line, because I’m going to be painting all the way
up to that edge. I took a really really watered down version of that Pumice Stone and painted
all around that circle area. Then I hit it with my heat tool until everything was completely
dry. I’m going to be working on the sentiment area for this card. At first I was going to
have this sentiment on some vellum, which is why you see it on the top of the screen,
embossed on vellum. Instead I decide that I was going to watercolor paint a little strip
of water color paper and then emboss that greeting from the stamp set on the water color
paper. This just made it so the greeting or the sentiment stood out a little bit more.
So I just heat set that until it was completely dry, because I’m inpatient and I didn’t want
to wait for it to dry. Then I prepped that watercolor strip with my EK Success powder
tool and then stamped the greeting in VersaMark ink. I then sprinkled on some white embossing
powder. This is from Hero Arts and then I took my heat tool and heat set this until
it was completely melted. After that I put foam adhesive on the back and then adhered
that down on to the water color piece which was already on a 4.25″x4.25″ card. I then
added a little bit of shimmer using my Wink of Stella Clear Glitter Brush Pen. That will
finish up the card for today. Hope you guys enjoyed today’s card. I think this kind of
spotlight water coloring would be fun on a lot of other types of cards. Thank you so
much for watching and I will catch you guys next time. Just a reminder that all of the supplies that
I used on today’s card are listed down below with links in the video description or over
at my blog. On screen right now are my three most recent Make a Card Monday videos, so
if you want to get some more card inspiration, go ahead and check those out. You can visit

Great idea 🙂  Waiting for my paints in the mail.  I have been pondering which watercolors to get for a long time .. I have the sparkling H2Os, which give a beautiful effect, but you don't always want "sparkly".  I'm glad that I never made a decision because I know I'm going to LOVE the kuretake's!  I got the set of 36 because those metallics are stunning!  Can't wait

Cute card. Wondering about embossing on velium. Is a special heat resistant material used or just regular velium. I tried embossing but the velium became brittle. I was very careful not to hold the heat tool close and just enough to melt the embossing powder. Hope you can help me, I have a lot of velium.

  85. cardsstampsandink July 21, 2016 at 11:13 am

Love the Card Kristina! Question…how did you get your name on your Misti?

  86. Stela Kang December 29, 2016 at 10:37 pm

Hey Kristina! I LOVE ALL YOUR CARDS! This might be a bit of a stupid question… but you said that the watercolor paper is 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 and your card base is 4 1/4 x 4 1/4. Did you trim down the watercolor paper later? (doesn't seem like you did) Thank you for all you inspiration!
