‘White Noise of the City’ · Speed-Painting with Winsor and Newton Pigment Marker #colouryourcity

Alright, hi you lot welcome back! So today’s
speed-painting is gonna be a little bit different from the usual. I’m not gonna be using gouache
or watercolour, I’m actually gonna be using these pigment markers from Winsor and Newton.
So a lovely lady called Georgina from ColArts contacted me and asked if I would like to
try the markers and also if I’d like to take part in Winsor and Newton’s ‘Colour Your City’
campaign where an artist is invited to create a piece using these markers that they feel
best represents the character of the city that they live in. So I was very eager to
take part in that and also once I started seeing some of my favourite YouTube artists
also taking part and using these markers, I was even more excited to just jump right
in with it. So I started to think about my city, I started to think about what it meant
to me, and my mind was blank. Well it was kind of the opposite! I live in London, I’ve
liver here my whole entire life, I love it here. And when it came to trying to pin one
thing down that I loved about it the most or that I felt represented it the most, it
was hard to sort of pick one thing. So earlier today I went out, I was actually on my way
to the dentist, I started filming a few shots, to see if I could get a snapshot of the city
around me, pick up on some ideas, some themes. Trying to pin-point and capture the highlights
of this city. But there’s just so much to focus on; the architecture, the history, the
hustle and bustle, all the sights and landmarks that even though I might see some of them
everyday and they sort of become just a backdrop to my life, they never really become just
‘everyday’, there’s always still something, a sense of something special about them. And
then there’s all the little pockets of green space, the towering skyscrapers, the Thames
that kind of stinks and the big red buses that definitely stink. All that stuff and
then so much more in each individuals experiences. Now when I was at uni, I actually got to learn
a little bit more about London, one of my English modules was ‘reading London’, so the
literature of the city, and what I realised through that is that everyone has their own
version of London, shaped by their own unique experiences of the city and even just the
particular area that they choose to visit. So I wanted to reflect the always-different,
always-unique, always-changing, view of London. London through the eyes of the individual
rather than the London seen by the majority. We’re all so surrounded here by constant noise
and activity, and movement and people all the time. And in a way I think we adjust to
learn how to quiet it all, and exist within our own little bubbles of reality and even
shut ourselves off a bit, just so we can regulate and control how much of the city actually
makes it into the forefront of our attention. And living in that bubble, it can be isolating
at times. But it can also be quite liberating. And I know, for me personally, whenever I
am away from it all, I do start to miss that white noise of the city.
So I hope you enjoyed this video. It was such a fun project and such an enlightening theme
to explore. And a really fun medium to explore it with; these markers that are unlike anything
I’ve ever used that give your work a really unique finish. Now, if you wanna take part
in colouring your city, all you have to do is use the hashtag #colouryourcity on your
artwork. And if you want a more in-depth review of these markers, a couple of videos that
I would recommend; the YouTube channel Tillith did a really in-depth one, she did swatches
of all the different colours, and did some stuff with blending and she ended up doing
this really lovely representation of street art in Berlin. Also, Adam and Steph from Doodle
Date did a really informative, really genuine first impressions video and they finished
that off with some really cute doodles as well. So I will leave those two videos linked
below. Also, I’m sure if you just search on YouTube ‘Winsor and Newton Pigment Markers’
you’ll be able to find some good information, the Winsor and Newton website has some good
information on there and a couple more videos. But before I bombard you with any more information,
I’ll jjust leave it there, I’ll say thanks so much for watching, it’s such a lovely sunny
day outside, I can’t get over it. Have a lovely weekend and I will see you next time, bye!

What a treat to see an extra video this week. I really liked your finish piece and what you said about London. I live in London and my experience is very similar to what you said. I get so excited to see youtube videos from Londoners about London. I most say I preferred your video's than the two you suggested, but thanks for the suggestions. I look forward to your next video. Now I most edit a video and get it out and stop allowing myself to get distracted. Enjoy your weekend.

Keep posting videos! We Love you 💕😁

  27. Sr Bob July 9, 2016 at 7:56 am

The markers are not streaky she is just laying down the pigment faster. When using markers you have to be slower if you want a full chunk of color, that way the paper has time to absorbe. That's just markers 101.

  28. Flygfisk July 9, 2016 at 11:24 am

Awesome video! I've also tried the Pigment markers and they are really fun to work with I think. 🌿

    Love your perspective. Great drawing!!

  35. iAmDFreeman July 11, 2016 at 6:00 pm

The ambience of this video was both sensational and relaxing. I have no idea what that means, but it sounds great. 2:09 this scene was so visually satisfying…like, you have no idea! I admire how you worked from negative space and started with the background up towards the foreground. I love how you added the tiny bloopers and outtake moments at the end. There must be something in the London air because your music tastes for these videos are always superb. Ok, enough of me being a fanboy, I like the warm color scheme used throughout the piece. Who would've guessed that painting with MARKERS would come out so great. Good job Min! 👏🏿😁

  36. Allison Ranieri July 11, 2016 at 10:12 pm

I've been so stoked to try these markers with the appropriate paper – but I haven't gotten around to buying it yet, it's quite expensive here! Thanks for sharing your take on them!
